Rapid Fire Crossing and Finishing

Purpose

The purpose of this drill is to help players communicate and put crosses into dangerous areas for the striker to attack

Set up

  • 10 x 15-yard area
  • 4 players ( 2 wide players, 1 Attacker, 1 Defender)
  • 2 goals
  • 10 soccer balls (5 per player)

How it works

The wide players will start with the ball and cross the ball into the box for the attacker.

The attacker can choose which goal they want to score in and which wide player they would like to receive the ball from.

If they are able to score a goal they will 3 points, however if the defender is able to clear the ball out of the area they will get 1 point and get 3 points if they win the ball and pass it back to the wide player.

After the attacker has received 10 crosses the players will swap roles with the player with the most points winning the round

Coaching points

  • A quick movement to get away from the defender, first move away from the space second is towards the space.
  • Communicate with your wide player as to where you want the ball
  • Time the run, keep your eye on the ball and commit to the cross

Questions

  • How can you get away from the defender?
  • How does the wide player know where to put the ball?
  • What can you do to increase your chance of scoring the first time?
